I am doing a few workshops with nod-A at the Cité Des Sciences (Paris’ science museum) to help them set up their FabLab. For the first workshop, we built a blinking sign for the FabLab. For the second one, we chose to build an instrument with Matthieu Metzger, from ONJ (Orchestre National de Jazz).

He had hacked a kid’s saxophone to use it as a synthetiser and connect it to a talk-box. We chose to make it with a laser cutter and standard components so other people could make it too.

The main idea was to use the base of Jelle Decker‘s curve case for Raspberry Pi, add keys to play the notes and just use the flexibility of the material to make the keys move.

There is no speaker inside the instrument.
It is made to have 4 main uses:

connected to headphones

connected to speaker

connected to talk-box

connected to computer via MIDI

The number, position and functionality of the keys is all made to make it feel like a real saxophone.

(we’ve used wood glue to stick the parts together, but I usually prefer to use tight-fit)

The insides:

The switches at the top make it change mode (not quite coded yet):

Here’s Matthieu playing the instrument:

And here, he is playing the saxo-synth connected to a talk-box:

Download the Ai file and the code on thingiverse.

The layout of all the parts:

Main developments:

make it stronger. I’ve changed the file on thingiverse and added long bits inside on the sides but I haven’t tested yet

make a drawing showing the way it’s wired

make buttons feel nicer

find a way to open it more easily

make it play less ‘bippy’ sounds

make the LED change color according to the sounds played (it only shows a random color at the moment)

At the first ArtGame WeekEnd, we created a game that could be passed over from generation to generation. The game got a fair bit of attention. The project has been going on since, in the hands of the team at One Life Remains.

It will be exhibited at a show in Dublin and we needed a case to put an iPhone into. We used the laser cutter at nod-A to build a quick and dirty one.

The main idea was to protect the phone and prevent people from pressing the iPhone button and escape the game.

Here’s what we came up with:

You can download the blueprints in Illustrator, modify it, do what you want with it…

You can also find it on Thingiverse.

What’s not to love about SketchChair?

It’s got Open-source, parametric design, digital fabrication and it was crowd-funded on KickStarter!

So what is it?

SketchChair is an application that aims to allow anyone to design a chair and make it (or have it made). You can just draw the profile of the chair and it generates all the profile sections for you. You can then have it CNC cut in your nearest FabLab or using an online service. The application even has some physics in it that checks if the chair you designed is actually stable (I haven’t seen the application yet).

Check out their website and video.

Anyways,

as soon as I heard the project was going to be crowd-funded on KickStarter, I went to check it out. As always with KickStarter, there were different ‘pledge’ levels. I was really tempted to go for the full size Antler chair (their flagship chair) but it was a bit too expensive and I went for the ‘educator kit’. I think that kit is interesting because the project says a lot about future trends in digital fabrication and design. I’m sure the kit will get useful in workshops some day.

For some reasons, there were a few hick-ups with Amazon payments (we got refunded and had to pay again) but the SketchChair team sent us regular project updates and we followed the evolution of the project.

But there we go, 5 months after backing it up on KickStarter, I received my eductor kit!

So what’s in it?

2 posters and 5 laser cut chair models.

It was all carefully wrapped in soft paper.

Each chair is laser-cut in a thin A5 sheet of plywood (although the ‘real’ chairs would be CNC cut).
Each comes with some instructions one a piece of paper.

I used a sharp cutter to take the pieces off the board.

It wasn’t very hard to put together, but it isn’t very stable either (who cares?).

Here’s a picture next to something familiar, so you get an idea of its size:

The result is really cute. I can’t wait to put together the other chairs…

So?

I really like this project and I’m glad I helped make it happen.

By the way, here are some other projects I have backed-up on KickStarter:

Conclusion

We’ve got a vinyl cutter at the office at the moment, so I thought I’d give it a shot.

The machine gave me a bit of trouble because it’s a bit old and grumpy.

The sticker is glossy black and the bike is matt black, so it works out pretty well (it’s tricky to show in a picture though, but you get the idea).

You might remember the Verticulture project, that I worked on during the RCA with Marek Bereza, Sian Smyth and Lucy Helme. It’s a vertical gardening system based on a modular stackable frame system. The frame works like a 2×4 Lego brick and can be stacked to make all kinds of structures (walls, towers, Ls, etc.). I find this structure really interesting because you can build anything

I happened to be working with a laser cutter during the FabLab Squared project and used it to work on a new version of the frame. The original prototype was water jet cut steel and then CNC bent and spray painted. Going with simple laser cutting could lower the price of each unit. Also, the units could be flatpacked and assembled by the user himself.

Using the etching capabilities of the laser, I wrote the name of each part to make it easier to assemble.

I started with 3mm cardboard and then moved to 3mm MDF.

The pieces slide in together, the last one locking the other ones in place. The pieces are 20 x 20 x 40 cm because I didn’t want to waste too much wood. But the idea would be to double the size and keep the locking system the same size.

I added a small dent so that the frames stay in place when stacked. It still isn’t perfect but it’s always nice to breath a bit of life in an old project…

So if you want to give it a shot, get the files here. Anyways,I’m not sure how we ended up associating those too but it sounds awesome. The short for those too are (ninja) and (flex).
Check out ninjaflex.com!
